Update your browser

It's free and takes a minute. Old browsers miss security fixes and some websites stop working in them.

Not sure which browser you have, or whether it's out of date? My setup tells you.

A browser window with the three-dot menu at the top right open, showing Help and then About Google Chrome YourWebsite.com Settings Help › About Google Chrome Exit
In Chrome: ⋮ at the top right, then Help › About Google Chrome. Edge and Firefox are similar.

Chrome on a computer

  1. Click ⋮ (top right) › Help › About Google Chrome.
  2. Chrome checks and downloads any update by itself.
  3. Click Relaunch. Your tabs come back. No Relaunch button means you're already up to date.

Edge on a computer

  1. Click … (top right) › Help and feedback › About Microsoft Edge.
  2. If it offers Download and install, click it.
  3. Click Restart. If it says Microsoft Edge is up to date, you're done.

Firefox on a computer

  1. Click ☰ (top right) › Help › About Firefox.
  2. Firefox checks and downloads any update by itself.
  3. Click Restart to update Firefox.

Safari, on an iPhone, iPad or Mac

Safari updates with the system, so update that.

  1. iPhone or iPad: Settings › General › Software Update.
  2. Mac: Apple menu › System Settings › General › Software Update.
  3. Tap or click Update Now if there's one waiting. Plug in and use Wi-Fi first.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the Play Store, search for Chrome.
  2. Tap Update. If it says Open, you're already up to date.

Linux

On Linux, Chrome and Firefox update with the rest of your system, not from inside the browser.

  1. Open your system's updater (on Ubuntu, Software Updater).
  2. Install the updates it offers, then restart the browser.

If that didn't work

  1. Restart the computer or phone, then try again.
  2. Very old computers and phones stop getting updates. If yours has, try another browser, such as Firefox, which supports older systems for longer.
  3. Send whoever's helping you your My setup link.
