Guide
How to add alt text in Wix and Wix Studio
To add alt text in Wix (the words a screen reader reads out in place of a picture), click the picture, then Settings, and fill in What's in the image?
Which Wix editor are you using?
Wix's help names three editors, and the boxes are in slightly different places in each:
- Wix Editor: the classic Wix editor.
- Studio Editor: Wix Studio, which Wix's help writes for people building sites for clients.
- Wix Harmony Editor: the third, where you open settings from an action bar.
If you're not sure, follow the Wix Editor steps first. If the box isn't where they say, try the next set.
Add alt text to one picture
Wix Editor and Wix Studio
- Open your editor and click the picture.
- Click the Settings icon.
- Type a short description under What's in the image?
- Press Enter to save it.
Wix Harmony Editor
- Click the picture, then the Settings icon on the action bar.
- Open the Accessibility drop-down.
- Type the description under Alt text and press Enter.
Then Publish. Wix says the alt text isn't live until you do.
Not sure what to write? How to write good alt text has examples, or the Alt text writer drafts it from your photo.
Gallery pictures
In a gallery, each picture's title is used as its alt text unless you write different alt text. A title like "Summer 1" won't help anyone, so either make the title describe the picture or fill in the alt text box.
- Click the gallery, then Manage Media (in the Wix Editor it may say Change Images).
- Click a picture and type its title.
- To use different words for screen readers, type them under Alt text. In the Wix Editor, this box is in the Wix Pro Gallery.
- Click Done (in the Wix Harmony Editor, press Enter).
Wix Stores product photos
- Go to Products in your site's dashboard and click the product.
- In the Images and videos section, click the More Actions icon, then Edit alt text.
- Type the alt text next to each photo.
- Click Apply.
There's a Copy to all images button. Use it only as a starting point: Wix's own advice is not to give two pictures on a page the same alt text, so add what's different about each photo ("back view", "in gray").
Background pictures
Wix says background pictures on strips, columns, slideshows and pop-ups can have alt text too. If a background shows something people need to know about, give it alt text. If it's only a texture or a pattern, it doesn't need any.
Add alt text to many pictures at once
Wix's Accessibility Wizard lists the pictures on each page that have no alt text, so you can fill them in one after another.
- Open the wizard. Wix Editor: Settings at the top, then Accessibility Wizard. Wix Studio: Site Checker on the left, then Fix Accessibility Issues. Wix Harmony: your site's name at the top left, then Accessibility, Fix Issues.
- Click Scan Site, then the Detected issues tab (not needed in Wix Harmony).
- Click a page, then Add alt text to images, then Get started (or Edit if every picture already has some).
- Click the Edit icon next to a picture, type the alt text, and click Apply.
- AI alt text: the same list has a Generate button that writes alt text with AI, for one picture or the whole page. Wix says it can't promise it's accurate and asks you to check every one. It doesn't work on SVG or GIF files.
- Decoration: for a picture that's only decoration, tick This image is decorative instead, so screen readers skip it. Never do this for a picture that's also a link.
To check the live site afterwards, Picture Check looks at up to 10 pictures on a page and lists any with no alt text, or with a file name standing in for it.
How long should Wix alt text be?
Wix's help doesn't give a hard limit for the box. Its advice is to keep alt text short, and one of its guides says to write 125 characters at most. That's about one sentence, like this one. Longer details belong in the page's text.
Send this to your web person

Hi, Could you add alt text (short descriptions for screen readers) to the pictures on our Wix site, [your website address], and publish it?
