Wix: "Looks like this domain isn't connected to a website yet"

"Looks like this domain isn't connected to a website yet" is Wix's page for a domain that reaches Wix but isn't linked to a live site.

In short: your domain is like a mailing address that leads to Wix's building, but nobody has told the front desk which apartment is yours, so visitors wait in the lobby. Giving your domain to your site (with a paid plan that's still active) is telling the desk the apartment number.

Your site is usually still there in your Wix account. Wix can only show it at your own domain while four things are true:

  • the site has an active Premium or Studio plan (a paid plan),
  • the domain itself is paid up,
  • the domain is assigned to that site in your Wix account,
  • the site is published.

When one of them stops being true, visitors get this page instead.

If you're visiting a site

Nothing is wrong with your phone or computer. The business's Wix account needs attention, and only they can fix it. Contact them by phone or email, or look them up on Google Maps. They may not know their site is down, so telling them helps.

If it's your site

Fix it today: until you do, nobody can reach your site at its own address. Log in to Wix and work down this list, which follows Wix's own Domain Assistant.

  1. Check you're in the right Wix account. If someone else set up your site, the site or the domain may be in their account, not yours.
  2. Check your plan. Go to Premium Subscriptions and look at the Status. If it says Expired, Wix says you must upgrade to a new plan to reconnect your site to your domain.
  3. Check the domain hasn't run out. On the same page, look at the Upcoming payment column for the domain, and click Update Payment Method if it's overdue. After a missed renewal, Wix keeps a Wix-bought domain in a grace period of about 30 days, when it's disconnected from your site but can be renewed with no extra fee; after that comes a redemption period of about 30 days, when getting it back costs more.
  4. Check the domain is assigned to your site. Go to Domains. If it says Not Assigned to a Site, click Assign next to it, pick your site, click Next, then Assign. If it's assigned to the wrong site, open the Domain Actions menu beside it and choose Assign to a Different Site.
  5. Check the site is published. Open the editor and click Publish at the top right.
  6. Check for a contact-details email. Domain rules (from ICANN, which runs the domain system) make every owner confirm their contact details. If Wix sent you an email titled Verify domain contact info now to keep your site live and you didn't click Confirm, the domain is switched off until you do. On the Domains page, click Resend Confirmation Email if you see it.
  7. Wait up to 48 hours. Wix says changes to a domain can take that long to reach everyone. If it still isn't right after that, contact Wix Customer Care.

If your domain was bought somewhere else

If you bought the domain from GoDaddy, Namecheap or another company and connected it to Wix, steps 1, 2, 4 and 5 above still apply. On top of them, the domain's settings at that company (its DNS records, the entries that tell browsers where your site lives) have to match the ones Wix gives you, either by pointing or by name servers. Wix shows the exact records for your account in your Domains page. If someone else set this up, send them the message below.

If you moved your site away from Wix

Seeing Wix's page after a move means your domain's DNS records still send visitors to Wix. Whoever runs your new site needs to change those records at the company where your domain is registered, so they point at the new host.

Hi,

Our website shows Wix's page "Looks like this domain isn't connected to a website yet" instead of our site.

It started on: [date]
Our domain is: [yourname.com]
We bought the domain from: [Wix, or the company's name]

Could you check, in Wix's Domain Assistant order: that the site's Premium plan is active, that the domain is paid up and assigned to the right site, that the site is published, and (if the domain is registered elsewhere) that its DNS records match the ones Wix gives us? Please tell me what you found and what you changed.

Thanks

Stop it happening again

  • Turn on auto-renew for both the plan and the domain, and keep the card on your Wix account up to date. They renew separately.
  • Make sure your own email address is on the Wix account, so renewal and contact-detail emails reach you.
  • Site health shows the date your domain is registered until, where the domain registry publishes it. Put that date in your calendar a month early. Keep your domain from running out has the three yearly checks.
