Squarespace or Wix mobile view looks bad?

Both builders rearrange your page for phones on their own. Check the phone version, then fix it in the builder's mobile view.

In short: on a computer your page is laid out side by side; on a phone there's only room for one column, so the builder stacks everything. Things that looked fine side by side can end up cropped, squashed or in the wrong order. You fix that in the builder's phone view.

See what your visitors see

  1. Open Screen sizes (our mobile-friendly test) and type your page's address. It shows the page at a phone's, a tablet's and a laptop's width side by side.
  2. Look for text cut off, things overlapping, a banner cropped through someone's head, or a page that scrolls sideways.
  3. Then open the page on a real phone, held upright. Builders' own previews are close, not exact: Squarespace says its device view is a general idea, not exact for every phone.

Fix it this week if your menu, phone number or main button is hidden or cut off on phones. Smaller problems can wait. A page that works on a phone also tends to work for people who zoom in to read.

Squarespace mobile view looks bad

On Squarespace 7.1, your site resizes for phones by itself and stacks content into one column. To see and change the phone layout, click Edit on the page, then the Mobile View icon at the top right of the preview.

If your sections use the newer drag-and-drop editor (Fluid Engine), some changes in mobile view stay on the phone only:

  • Move blocks up or down, and resize them.
  • Hide a block on phones: click the Layers icon at the top left of the section, then the eye icon next to the block.
  • Changing words, links or pictures changes them on the computer version too.
  • Blocks you add later go in roughly where they sit on the computer, so check mobile view again after each change.

Common problems, and what fixes them:

Banner or background picture cropped
Some cropping on phones always happens. Open the image and drag its focal point (the small circle) onto what matters. Less text over a banner means less cropping. Pictures over 2500 pixels on the long edge can cause problems on phones, so shrink them first.
Text too big, too small or overlapping
Big headings shrink to fit. If lines overlap, raise the line height in Site styles, Fonts. Keep letter spacing at 0 or more.
Gaps in the wrong place
Spacer blocks are usually hidden on phones. Use section padding instead.
Menu missing
On phones the menu folds behind a menu icon. If the icon is the same color as the header, nobody can see it. Click Edit site header in mobile view to change it.
Visitors have to pinch and zoom (version 7.0)
In your template's settings, make sure Disable mobile styles is unchecked.

With the older classic editor, changes you make in mobile view also change the computer version, so check both.

Wix mobile site not displaying correctly

First, which editor is your site in? The classic Wix Editor keeps a separate phone version of your site. Wix Studio uses screen-size breakpoints, and the newer Wix Harmony editor adjusts by itself. The fixes below are for the classic Wix Editor, the one most small sites use.

  • Open the mobile editor with the mobile icon at the top of the editor (or Ctrl+J, Cmd+J on a Mac).
  • Changes in the mobile editor don't touch your computer version. Changes on the computer version can change the phone one.
  • Publish when you're done: phone edits don't go live until you do.
Phones show the computer version, tiny
Click Settings at the top, then Mobile Friendly, and turn it on. With it off, Wix shows the desktop site on phones.
Something is missing on the phone
Wix hides things that sit outside the gridlines or don't fit. Click Hidden on Mobile on the left and show it again. Not there? It may be inside a strip or box, behind another element, or the header or footer may be turned off on that page.
Sections in the wrong order
Click the Zoom Out icon, then Move section up or Move section down.
Text too big or too small
Click the text and use Scale Up or Scale Down, or drag the Font Size slider in its settings.
Text overlaps, or things sit out of line on the live site
Phones draw pages slightly differently. Wix suggests one text box per paragraph with space between, grouping side-by-side items into a container box, and widening text boxes that break oddly.
Looks wrong on an iPad, or sideways
Wix shows tablets like iPads the desktop version, and supports phones held upright only.

To try it on your own phone, open Preview in the mobile editor and scan the QR code.

Wix Studio: pick the mobile breakpoint icon at the top. Changes flow down from bigger screens to smaller ones, never up. Right-click something and choose Hide to hide it at that size only.

Hi,

Our website, [your website address], looks wrong on phones. It's built on [Squarespace / Wix].

What I see: [for example, the banner is cropped, the menu is missing, text overlaps].
On which pages: [the pages].
On which phone: [for example, iPhone 15 in Safari].

Could you fix the phone layout in the builder's mobile view, without changing the computer version, and tell me what you changed?

Thanks
