Shrink a photo

A phone photo is often 5 MB. A website needs about 200 KB. Pick your photos and get small copies, ready to upload.

or drop them here, or

Your photos never leave your computer or phone.

Why bother

  • Faster pages

Big photos are one of the most common reasons small websites are slow, especially on phones with a weak signal.

  • Your location

Phones hide where a photo was taken inside the file. The small copy leaves that out, so you don't publish your address by accident.

  • WebP

The copies are WebP, a format every current browser shows and most website builders accept. Usually 25 to 35% smaller than a JPEG of the same quality.

Once they're small, give each photo a description for people using screen readers: the Alt text writer drafts one. Website accessibility: where to start, with the tools that help and what the law asks.

How to use it

  1. Choose your photos (several at once is fine).
  2. Leave 1600 pixels unless you need a different size.
  3. Save the small copies and upload them to your website in place of the big ones.
