Redirect a page and fix 404 errors
A redirect (or 301 redirect) sends anyone using a page's old address to its new one, so old links, bookmarks and Google don't hit a 404 error.
When you need one
- You changed a page's address (its "slug", the part after your domain, like
/about-us). - You deleted a page, a product or a blog post that people still link to.
- You moved your site from another builder, and the old addresses don't exist any more.
- A customer, or a report, says a link on your site leads to "Page not found".
Use a 301 (moved for good) almost every time. A 302 means moved for now, and Google keeps the old address. Fix the links on your own pages too: a redirect is a safety net, and your own menu shouldn't need one. On WordPress, see redirect a page in WordPress without a plugin.
Find the 404 errors first
- On your own pages: Link Check tests every link on a page and lists the ones that end at a missing page. Its whole-site check reads up to 10 pages and emails you one report.
- Links from other websites: in Google Search Console, the Pages report lists addresses Google tried that came back Not found (404).
- Pages Google still remembers: search Google for
site:yourwebsite.com. Any old address in the results needs a redirect if the page has gone.
Redirect a page on Squarespace (URL mappings)
Squarespace doesn't add a redirect when you change a page's URL slug. Anyone using the old link, or scanning an old QR code, gets a 404 until you add one.
- Open the Developer tools panel and click URL mappings.
- Click into the box and add one line per redirect: the old address, an arrow made of a dash and a greater-than sign, the new address, and
301. - Click Save.
- Renamed a page
/about -> /team 301- Deleted a page
/history -> / 301(a single slash is your home page)- Moved a whole blog
/blog/[name] -> /posts/[name] 301- Sent to another website
/fundraiser -> https://example.org/fundraiser 301(start it with https://)
Squarespace redirect not working?
- The old page must not exist any more: delete it, disable it or change its URL. The new page must exist and be enabled.
- Match the capitals exactly:
/Aboutand/aboutare different. - Most redirects can't use
?,&or#. - Lines run top to bottom, so put specific ones above broad ones.
- You can't redirect pictures or files, or redirect away from your home page.
- "Not enough parts" means the arrow or the 301 is missing. "Too many parts" usually means a space between the dash and the greater-than sign. "Expected to find 301 or 302" means something else is in the last part.
To make your not-found page more helpful, build a page in the Not linked section of the Pages panel, then choose it under System Pages, 404 Page. Squarespace says a "Soft 404" alert in Google Search Console afterward isn't a problem with your site.
Wix Redirect Manager
Redirects on Wix need a Premium plan and your own connected domain. You can't redirect from a free Wix address.
When you change a page's URL slug, Wix adds a redirect for you, labeled Auto redirect. That covers normal pages, store products and categories, bookings, events and programs. Blog posts aren't covered: add those yourself.
- In your site's dashboard, go to SEO & GEO, scroll to Tools and settings and click URL Redirect Manager.
- Click + New Redirect, then Single redirect.
- In Old URL, type the old address, like
/about-us. - In Redirects to, pick the new page from the list, or type an address.
- Click Save. It takes a few minutes to start working.
- You can't redirect from your home page, and a site can have up to 5,000 redirects.
- If an automatic redirect clashes with one you made, Wix lets you update yours or keep it.
- You can also design your own 404 page, so lost visitors see your menu and a way back (not for store, booking or app pages).
Fix 404 errors on Shopify (URL redirects)
On Shopify, a "404 Page not found" usually means a product, collection or page moved or went away:
- its URL handle (the address) was changed without a redirect,
- a product was set to Draft, removed from every sales channel or deleted,
- a collection was hidden,
- the store moved from another platform and the old addresses weren't redirected.
When you change a page's web address, Shopify ticks Create a URL redirect for you, and collections offer the same choice. If you're not sure it was ticked, add one by hand:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Content, Menus.
- Click View URL Redirects, then Create URL redirect.
- In Redirect from, enter the old address, like
/products/old-mug. - In Redirect to, enter the new one, like
/products/blue-mug. Enter/for your home page. Use the short form (starting with a slash) for pages on your own store. - Save it. Redirects should work straight away.
Lots to add after a move? Go to Content, Menus, URL redirects, click Import and upload a CSV file.
Shopify redirect not working?
- Shopify only redirects addresses that are broken. If the old address still opens a page, the redirect won't work.
- Check both addresses for typos, then clear your cache or try another device.
- If you make a hidden collection visible again, Shopify deletes its redirect, because the address works again.
- Don't redirect
/404to your home page: it stops the theme editor showing your 404 page.
Check it worked
- Open the old address in a private (incognito) window. It should land on the new page.
- Run Link Check again. The broken links should be gone. Links on your own pages that now pass through a redirect show as "Moved" (or "Long way around" after two or more): they work, but point them straight at the new address.
Send this to your web person
Not sure what to say? Copy this into an email, add your website's address, and send it.
Hi, Some old addresses on [your website address] now show a 404 Page not found error. The broken ones are in this report: [the report's link]. Could you: 1. Add a 301 redirect from each old address to the page that replaced it (or the closest one). 2. Fix the links on our own pages so they go straight to the new addresses. 3. Check our not-found page has a link home and the menu. We're on [Squarespace / Wix / Shopify]. Thanks
