404: Page not found

The website works, but the page you asked for isn't there. Usually it was moved, renamed or deleted, and a link somewhere still points at the old address.

What you'll see

Any browser
404, Not Found, Page not found, or the site's own page saying something like "Oops! That page can't be found". Some sites show this page without saying 404 at all.

If you're visiting a site

  1. Check the address for typos.
  2. Go to the site's home page and use its menu or search.
  3. Search for the page's name with the site's name in Google.
  4. If you came from a link, tell whoever's site it was on: they'll want to fix it.

Stuck, and someone's helping you? Send them your details with My setup, or a screenshot and the error messages with PageKiwi for Chrome.

If it's your site

  1. Run Link Check on your pages. It finds links that go to missing pages, including ones that look fine but land on a "not found" page.
  2. For each one, point the link at the page's new address, or remove it.
  3. If you moved or renamed a page, ask your web person to add a "redirect" from the old address to the new one, so old links and Google keep working.
  4. Make your own 404 page helpful: a link home, your menu and a search box.
